Course of events

After the defeat at Żarnów, John II Casimir Vasa arrived in Kraków on 19 September 16551. He entrusted the defence of the city and the castle to the castellan of Kiev, Stefan Czarniecki, left him 3,600 men and authorised him to capitulate if relief did not come within two or three weeks2. On Saturday 25 September, when the suburbs had been set on fire on the king's orders, John Casimir left the city3.

On Sunday 26 September, before sunrise, the Swedes arrived. Wittenberg occupied Kleparz, and another detachment seized Kazimierz and plundered it for three days4. On the very first day Czarniecki was wounded in the face by a shot from the Bernardine church, but he returned to the ramparts and beat off an assault on the Grodzka Gate5. The defenders replied with sallies. In one of them the young men of the Kraków gymnasium, together with soldiers and craftsmen, destroyed the Swedish mines and spiked three guns, and Wittenberg lost a hundred men6. Further assaults were made on 30 September and 2 October. On the second of these days the Swedish guns fired 380 balls7.

Charles X Gustav, who in the meantime had routed the army of the field hetman (the deputy commander of the Crown army) at Wojnicz, returned to Kraków8. The fate of the city was decided by news from beyond the walls: the grand hetman of the Crown had been defeated at Gródek, and the quarter army (wojsko kwarciane) had declared itself ready to go over to the King of Sweden9. On 13 October a council of war concluded that the city could not hold out10. Czarniecki then signed the act of capitulation11; according to Czapliński, he did so on 17 October, after more than three weeks of defence counted from 26 September12. The capitulation allowed the garrison to march out on 19 October with its arms, colours unfurled and twelve guns. It was assigned quarters in Zator, Oświęcim, Sławków, Koziegłowy, Będzin and Siewierz, on condition that it did not take the field against the Swedes until 18 November13. On the morning of 19 October Czarniecki led Wolff's regiment, the haiduks of Sandomierz, 13 companies of dragoons and 600 hussars out of the city14.

Forces and losses

According to Kubala, Czarniecki's garrison numbered 3,600 men2. At the time only about 5,000 inhabitants remained in the city, and the city itself was surrounded by a double wall with 46 towers15.

Significance

Kraków was the old capital and the coronation city15. The victors levied a contribution of 600,000 złoty on the city, and Paul Wirtz was appointed governor16. Kubala regarded the surrender of the Polish army as the peak of Charles Gustav's success, after which the whole of Lesser Poland acknowledged him as its lord17. One condition of the capitulation also had consequences for Jasna Góra. Czarniecki was stationed with his troops at Siewierz, but, bound by the word he had given the Swedes, he had a free hand only from 18 November, when the monastery was already under siege18.

In the novel

Sienkiewicz changes the terms of the capitulation:

Pan kasztelan kijowski, poddając Kraków, wymówił sobie, że wyjdzie z całym wojskiem i pozostanie wraz z nim na Śląsku aż do końca wojny.

Henryk Sienkiewicz, The Deluge (Potop)19

(Our translation: "The castellan of Kiev, in surrendering Kraków, stipulated that he would march out with his whole army and remain with it in Silesia until the end of the war.")
