Course of events

John II Casimir’s forces were defeated by the Swedes at Żarnów. The royal army continued its retreat after the battle.1

A closer look

According to the Polish Army Museum, John II Casimir commanded about 11,000 men, mostly a noble levy. Gustav Otto Stenbock had a similar number of soldiers, but the Swedish side had a marked advantage in artillery. Similar headcounts did not mean equal military strength.1

The route into Lesser Poland

The Polish Army Museum connects the Swedish victory with opening the way into Lesser Poland.1 Follow the campaign through Wojnicz and the siege of Kraków, separate events within the same campaign.

Where can you see a trace of the battle?

The Regional Museum in Opoczno lists an engraving depicting the 1655 Battle of Żarnów and an extract from the 1660 inspection of the Opoczno royal estate in its permanent local history exhibition.2 The exhibition description does not identify the engraving’s artist or production date; the battle’s year need not be the image’s year.
