An experienced officer
Gustaf Otto Stenbock (1614–1685) came from the Swedish aristocracy and had military experience before the invasion of the Commonwealth. Charles X Gustav appointed him master-general of the ordnance and brought him to Poland in summer 1655. This office placed him over an essential branch of a siege army, rather than simply a cavalry detachment1.
The Polish campaign
Stenbock appears in the Polish Army Museum's account of the battle of Żarnów, fought during the pursuit of John Casimir's army. The Swedish biographical dictionary also records his later service in Poland and a junction with George II Rákóczi's troops. Denmark's attack on Sweden in 1657 drew Charles X Gustav away from Poland, and Stenbock too was ordered home. The Deluge had become one of several fronts for Sweden21.
Stenbock later held still higher Swedish offices. His career connects the Commonwealth campaign to the broader history of Sweden's Baltic power1.
Novel and film
The Swedish offensive is fundamental to Sienkiewicz's The Deluge, but Stenbock's biography needs historical evidence beyond the literary plot. No separate Stenbock role has been verified in Hoffman's cast34.
