How the battle unfolded
Four moments that changed the outcome.
A Crown scouting force of about 600 met the Swedish advance guard. The Swedes drove it back toward the Polish camp.
Cavalry on the Polish right under Aleksander Koniecpolski struck the advance guard and forced it to retreat.
In the next clash, Polish cavalry pursued the enemy into fire from infantry and dragoons concealed in low ground.
The Swedish left struck the Polish centre while Müller’s reiters moved through a ravine into the rear. Lanckoroński narrowly escaped capture.

Course of events
The Swedish army defeated Crown forces at Wojnicz. The defeat further weakened the position of Kraków’s defenders.1
A closer look
The Swedish king drew forces away from the siege of Kraków because the Crown army still threatened the operation. The museum describes an early Polish reconnaissance force, roughly 400 hussars in the centre, and Swedish infantry concealed in a depression. Polish cavalry rode into its fire during a pursuit, while Swedish reiters moved through a ravine onto their rear.1
Why here?
Kraków was under siege, but the Crown army remained in the field. Charles X Gustav first sent Robert Douglas with about 1,700 men to locate it; Douglas occupied Lanckorona Castle en route. The king left Kraków on 30 September with about 4,000 troops and garrisoned Wiśnicz. The Polish commanders Stanisław Potocki and Stanisław Lanckoroński, with about 6,000 men according to the museum, chose to fight near Wojnicz.1
The turn of the battle
At dawn on 3 October a Polish scouting party met the Swedish advance guard. Cavalry under Aleksander Koniecpolski initially forced that guard back. The ensuing Polish attack ran into infantry and dragoons concealed in low ground. Swedish reiters then moved through a ravine into the Polish rear. The formation broke, and Lanckoroński narrowly escaped capture.1
A defeat beyond the casualty count
The Polish Army Museum says losses on both sides were small. The political effect was much larger: Kraków's defenders could no longer count on relief by the field army, and some Crown troops soon pressed their commanders to change sides to Charles X Gustav.1
