Half a century of service
Stanisław Potocki, called Rewera (c. 1589–1667), studied at Basel and served in the army long before the Deluge. He fought Tatars and Cossacks, including at Martynów in 1624, and rose to become Crown grand hetman and voivode of Kraków. When Sweden invaded he was a deeply experienced commander facing a state already drained by war1.
During the Deluge
In October 1655 he was one of two Crown hetmans who surrendered to Charles X Gustav near Wiśnicz. Earlier the hetmans had tried to stop the Swedish advance at Wojnicz23.
His surrender did not determine his position for the rest of the war. He and Stanisław Lanckoroński later joined the Tyszowce confederation against Sweden4.
The sequence reconstructed by the Polish Biographical Dictionary is precise: the hetmans sent envoys to Charles X Gustav in October; their troops swore allegiance to him in November; on 16 December 1655 Potocki and Lanckoroński issued a proclamation calling for a break with Sweden. Their decisions shifted with the military situation and the mood of the army1.
Later campaigns and an unusual legacy
Potocki continued fighting Transylvanian, Cossack and Russian forces. The Commonwealth's campaign at Cudnów in 1660 ended with the surrender of a Russian army. His residence at Pidhaitsi suffered in the war. A striking trace of his devotion survives: the hetman's baton he offered to Our Lady of Częstochowa remains in the Jasna Góra treasury15.
Novel and screen
In Sienkiewicz's The Deluge, the fate of the hetmans forms part of the political background to collapse and recovery. Potocki truly lived through these events, although fictional dialogue is no record of his private decisions. The credited cast of Hoffman's film does not establish a separate Rewera Potocki role67.
