The Kościan episode

The Polish Army Museum names Louis de Nassau as commander of a hundred soldiers escorting wagons carrying the Swedish army's treasury. In October 1655 Krzysztof Żegocki attacked the Kościan garrison and then seized the transported treasure.1

Identity and later accounts

Some retellings call him a “prince” or “landgrave” and say he died in the ambush. The museum's brief account, however, gives no complete dynastic name, life dates or fate after the encounter. The Nassau family had many branches and several men named Louis; without firm evidence we do not merge this officer with another namesake. Nor can we safely assign him a portrait.1

Novel and film

The capture of Kościan belongs to the broader resistance story, though it is not a main strand of the film The Deluge. Hoffman's cast has no confirmed separate Louis de Nassau role.2
