Before the invasion

Dymitr Jerzy Wiśniowiecki (1631–1682) was a magnate and cavalry commander. After studies at Kraków he fought against Bohdan Khmelnytsky's forces at Zborów, Berestechko, Zhvanets and Okhmativ. The Swedish invasion was thus another front in a war that had already shaped his military career.1

A change of allegiance

He commanded hussar and armoured cavalry units in the defeat at Wojnicz on 3 October 1655, then entered Charles X Gustav's camp. He returned to the Crown army in February 1656. Kubala says that he and Aleksander Koniecpolski sent envoys to John Casimir to declare obedience. As a cavalry colonel Wiśniowiecki later fought in the three-day Battle of Warsaw, against Rákóczi's forces and at the siege of Toruń.12

His reversal illustrates a wider movement. After the capitulations of autumn 1655, part of the Crown army served Sweden; soldiers returning to the king helped rebuild resistance. Military allegiance in the Deluge's first months was less stable than a simple two-sided narrative suggests.13

Later career and storytelling

He fought at Chudniv in 1660, later became voivode of Belz and rose to field and then grand hetman of the Crown. He clashed politically with Jan Sobieski and supported King Michael Korybut Wiśniowiecki. He died at Lublin on 28 July 1682.1

The historical officer provides context for the shifts of allegiance in The Deluge. His career should not be confused with Andrzej Kmicic's fictional redemption, and we do not assign him an identified individual role in Hoffman's film.14
