A Scot in Swedish service

Robert Douglas (1611–1662) was born in East Lothian, Scotland. As a young man he entered Swedish service, a path taken by many Scottish soldiers of the period. He came to know the future Charles X Gustav at his father's court. Douglas fought in the Thirty Years' War, rose through the cavalry and served in Sweden's war administration. The University of St Andrews biographical database preserves a telling personal detail: even as a general he looked after relatives in Scotland and sent them money1.

Lesser Poland and Warsaw

In 1655 Charles X Gustav sent about 1,700 men under Douglas to reconnoitre before the battle of Wojnicz. They took Lanckorona Castle on the way. Later, when the king moved north, Douglas was left with a much larger force to secure Swedish positions in Lesser Poland. In 1656 he jointly commanded the right wing at Gniezno and in the three-day battle of Warsaw23.

He became a field marshal in 1657. His family travelled with him; one of his children was born in Poland in 1655. His career shows the international lives behind Sweden's invasion army1.

Novel and film

Douglas's name appears in Sienkiewicz's The Deluge, but the novel does not tell his Scottish life story. No distinct role for the general has been verified in Hoffman's film cast45.
