A messenger beneath the walls

Jacek Brzuchański was a townsman of Częstochowa who brought information to the garrison during the siege of Jasna Góra. Kordecki describes his arrival on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception: disguised as a soldier, he passed the guards, announced that heavy guns were approaching from Kraków and threw a letter from its monastery over the walls. Kubala dates this episode to 8 December 165512.

Warning and capture

On a later attempt Brzuchański disguised himself as a Crown soldier. Kordecki says he threw a letter and a bag of fish onto the rampart, warning of preparations for an assault. The discarded bag on the snow reportedly attracted the guards’ attention. The messenger was captured and sentenced to death; the account says that a ransom later replaced the sentence. Kordecki presents his survival in religious terms, attributing it to the protection of the Virgin Mary3.

Kubala also reports Brzuchański’s message that John Casimir had supposedly reached Żywiec. The historian corrects it by noting that the king spent Christmas at Cieplice. This distinguishes information circulating inside the besieged monastery from a chronology reconstructed by a historian4.

What is known about his life?

Brzuchański matters here for maintaining communication between the town and the monastery. The sources used describe selected actions during the siege, but do not provide a full biography or birth and death dates. Kordecki wrote an account of the defence, while Kubala was a later historian using earlier testimony. Their descriptions should not be counted as two independent confirmations of every detail56.
