A cavalry career
Rutger von Ascheberg (1621–1693) gained experience in armies of the Thirty Years' War. In 1655 he received authority to recruit several companies of cavalry for Sweden and became a colonel in March 1656. The Swedish biographical dictionary traces his rise from professional cavalry officer to a later general and nobleman1.
Chojnice and a later raid
Around the turn of 1656–57 Ascheberg attacked troops escorting Queen Marie Louise toward Gdańsk near Chojnice. The Polish Army Museum describes an initial Swedish success followed by a Polish counterattack. Polish and Swedish accounts differ over the precise dating and outcome, so a simple claim of an uncontested victory is misleading2.
The Swedish biographical dictionary also describes a separate surprise attack on the night of 9–10 February 1657 against forces associated with John Casimir's movement from Gdańsk toward Greater Poland. This later raid must not be conflated with the queen's escort at Chojnice1.
Ascheberg also fought in Sweden's war against Denmark and later rose to senior command. The Deluge was one campaign in a career spanning several European fronts1.
Novel and film
Royal flight and return shape the narrative of Sienkiewicz's The Deluge, but Ascheberg's own career is best recovered from historical sources. No distinct Ascheberg role has been verified in Hoffman's film cast34.
