A German prince in Swedish service

Frederick VI, Margrave of Baden-Durlach (1617–1677), was a German prince connected to the Swedish dynasty. He commanded Swedish troops during the Deluge despite not being Swedish himself. Such dynastic and military connections were common in seventeenth-century armies. In spring 1656 he was ordered to reach Charles X Gustav, whose campaign was under pressure from the Commonwealth's counteroffensive12.

Why Warka mattered

Frederick marched south with a relief corps. On 7 April 1656 the combined forces of Stefan Czarniecki and Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski attacked near Warka. The Pilica crossing and speed of movement mattered as much as the battle itself. Frederick's force was defeated, showing that Commonwealth troops could do more than harass the invader: they could destroy an isolated formation of the regular Swedish army21.

Frederick survived and continued his military career. His failed relief mission illustrates how difficult it was for separated forces to rendezvous under pressure1.

Novel and film

Warka is an important part of the historical setting of Sienkiewicz's The Deluge, but Hoffman's film selects only some episodes. No distinct role for the margrave has been verified in its cast34.
