A veteran of European wars

Barthold Hartwig von Bülow served in German, Danish and Swedish armies. He was captured at Nördlingen in 1634, later resumed his career, and returned to Swedish service in spring 1655 as a major general. Like many officers in the Deluge, he brought experience from the Thirty Years' War1.

Holding Toruń

Bülow briefly commanded in Warsaw in 1656, then took over the Swedish garrison at Toruń. The Swedish biographical dictionary dates his command there from October 1656 to late 1658. With a garrison of about two thousand men, he repelled attacks and mounted sorties beyond the fortifications. Polish and imperial forces blockaded and besieged the city in 1658, until capitulation ended the prolonged defence12.

His command was more than passive endurance behind walls. Sorties challenged the besiegers and complicated a complete blockade. Toruń shows why isolated Swedish garrisons could continue resisting even late in the war1.

Novel and film

The Toruń campaign lies outside Kmicic's principal story in Sienkiewicz's The Deluge. No distinct Bülow role has been verified in Hoffman's cast. His part is best understood through siege history and military biography34.
