A closer look
Read this source carefully: its first paragraph describes a different Battle of Chojnice in 1454. For the 1657 event it reports an attack by Rutger von Ascheberg’s Swedish vanguard on Polish troops escorting Queen Marie Louise to Gdańsk. The Swedish attack was repelled after an initial success.1
Who escorted the queen?
The museum names troops belonging to Stefan Czarniecki, Stanisław Rewera Potocki and Stanisław Lanckoroński. Surprising part of the escort did not decide the fight: after repelling the Swedes, the Polish commanders joined forces for further offensive operations.1
Marie Louise was travelling to Gdańsk. Read this engagement alongside the city’s history, including its resistance and diplomatic importance.
