A closer look

At Filipów, Gosiewski lost to Swedish-Brandenburg forces only two weeks after his victory at Prostki. Read together, the two battles show how quickly the fortunes of one commander and one theatre could change.12

What was lost after Prostki?

The Polish History Museum says the Tatars left Gosiewski before the next battle. Defeat on 22 October cost him his prisoner, Bogusław Radziwiłł. He subsequently agreed a truce with the elector and withdrew from Ducal Prussia towards Samogitia to support resistance to the Swedes.3

Augusiewicz suggests Wojniłłowicz’s cavalry departed before Filipów; the exact date remains unknown.4
