Course of events

Wincenty Gosiewski’s Polish, Lithuanian and Tatar force defeated Swedish-Brandenburg troops. The battle was fought in Ducal Prussia.1

A closer look

Wincenty Gosiewski’s force combined Polish, Lithuanian and Tatar cavalry. Its opponent was a Swedish-Brandenburg corps in Ducal Prussia. The action shows that the coalition war also unfolded beyond the Crown lands.1

The river and a feigned retreat

The Polish History Museum describes Waldeck’s camp beside the Ełk and Gosiewski’s feigned flight, which drew the enemy across the river. Lithuanian forces took the camp; the Tatars engaged Bogusław Radziwiłł’s troops, and the prince was captured.2

Wojniłłowicz’s contribution

Sławomir Augusiewicz places Gabriel Wojniłłowicz’s Polish–Tatar cavalry on Gosiewski’s right wing. Their attack on the crossing’s defenders prevented support for Waldeck’s corps.3 Follow the victors and their important prisoner to Filipów.
