Course of events

Commonwealth forces fought the retreating Transylvanian army at Magierów. The campaign against George II Rákóczi was nearing its end.1

A closer look

Rákóczi’s retreating army was stretched out on the march. Czarniecki exploited this by attacking its rearguard. The museum says the Transylvanians left artillery and many wagons behind; its troop figures are estimates, not an exact roll call.1

The rearguard, not the whole army

The museum estimates Rákóczi’s army at about 20,000 men and Czarniecki’s cavalry at about 10,000. Its description of defeated troops abandoning artillery applies specifically to the rearguard. It does not say the entire Transylvanian army ceased to exist at Magierów.1

Continue with Rákóczi’s surrender. Trace his entry into the war through the Treaty of Radnot and the 1657 invasion.
