Peace did not end the eastern war

On 28 June 1660, less than two months after the Peace of Oliva, Polish-Lithuanian forces fought a Russian army at Połonka. Paweł Jan Sapieha and Stefan Czarniecki commanded the Commonwealth forces; Ivan Khovansky led the Russians1.

Outcome and meaning

The Commonwealth forces won. The battle belonged to the separate war with Russia that had begun in 1654. Placing it after Oliva shows why peace with Sweden did not mean the end of fighting12.
