A new enemy
Early in 1657 George II Rákóczi, prince of Transylvania, invaded the Commonwealth. Allied with Sweden, he had joined the Treaty of Radnot and its proposed division of Commonwealth territory1.
The political stakes
The Radnot plan envisaged a Polish crown for Rákóczi and control over a reduced Commonwealth. This was an allied plan, not a partition that actually took place1.
How the campaign ended
His forces fought during 1657 and, with the Swedes, forced another surrender of Warsaw. After retreat and defeats, the prince capitulated in July. The Polish History Museum dates the invasion broadly to the beginning of the year; the timeline does not invent a specific day1.
