Diplomat
Benedykt Skytte
Historical figureSwedish scholar and diplomat who negotiated with Lithuanian leaders in 1655.
Scholar at court
Bengt (Benedykt) Skytte (1614–1683) came from an influential Swedish official family. A courtier to Queen Christina, he became an administrator, privy councillor and keen student of scholarship and languages. His career was not chiefly military: he undertook foreign missions and temporarily lost Christina's confidence.1
During the Deluge
Skytte opposed the rupture of peace with Poland sought by Charles X Gustav. Once war began, however, he carried out the king's diplomatic work. With Magnus Gabriel de la Gardie he negotiated with Lithuanian nobles for Swedish support; in August he attended talks with Janusz Radziwiłł at Kėdainiai. The October agreement grew out of weeks of negotiation rather than a single military surrender.12
Later life
He also negotiated with the duke of Courland and briefly governed Estonia, then travelled through Germany, France and England. His career has a striking irony: a man who opposed starting the war became one of its negotiators.1
Novel and film
The Lithuanian talks form the historical background to Sienkiewicz's Kėdainiai scenes. We found no separately credited Skytte role in Hoffman's film cast.3
