From chancery to diplomacy

Mikołaj Prażmowski (1617–1673) advanced through the royal chancery and became Grand Crown Chancellor in 1658. He was among the men preparing negotiations with Sweden. The Gniezno archdiocese credits him with an important part in the talks ending in the Peace of Oliva in 166012.

War ended, politics continued

Peace with Sweden did not end the Commonwealth's internal disputes. Prażmowski supported Marie Louise and John Casimir in their plans for reform and election of a successor during the king's lifetime. During the conflict with Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski, he urged severe action against the marshal. He later took part in diplomacy leading to the 1667 Truce of Andrusovo with Russia21.

Prażmowski became archbishop of Gniezno and primate in 1666. He remained politically influential after John Casimir's abdication, opposing King Michael Korybut Wiśniowiecki. His career shows how the Deluge's peace negotiators also shaped the Commonwealth's later constitutional struggles12.

Novel and film

Prażmowski belongs to the historical setting of Sienkiewicz's The Deluge. Hoffman's film concentrates largely on the war's earlier phase and Kmicic's story; no separate named chancellor role has been verified in its cast34.
