A woman known from the siege account

Konstancja appears in Augustyn Kordecki’s account of the siege of Jasna Góra. He describes an elderly, courageous woman who lived by begging and sheltered in a rock crevice beside the ramparts. The Polish translation of 1858 spells her name “Konstancya”. Ludwik Kubala also describes her in his later study12.

A letter to the Swedish camp

Before Christmas, when no one would carry the prior’s letter to the enemy, Konstancja undertook the journey in return for bread. Kordecki reports that guards and officers greeted her with laughter. She delivered the letter and returned with a reply about negotiations and a holiday truce. The story reveals someone outside the military hierarchy participating in communication with the besiegers1.

Work beside the ramparts

The same accounts say that Konstancja collected shot and masonry fragments from the moat, gathered wood and supplied provisions she could find. The authors also attribute to her the burning of buildings obstructing the defence. These actions are reported in an account and a subsequent study, rather than an independently verified service record. Her story connects Jasna Góra with the people of Częstochowa and the monastery’s surroundings12.

The limits of the biography

The sources used here do not give her surname, birth and death dates or family history. These details have not been added to the messenger’s story. Kubala used earlier testimony, so his account and Kordecki’s do not independently confirm every detail. The scene shown on this page is a modern illustration of the account; Konstancja’s appearance is imagined12.
