More than the king's brother
Adolph John (1629–1689) was the younger brother of Charles X Gustav. Before the Deluge he held court and provincial offices. On 3 January 1656 he received supreme command over Sweden's armies in Poland and Prussia. Kinship helped secure the king's trust, but this office also carried responsibility for forces spread across occupied territory1.
The spring of 1656
When Charles X Gustav was in difficulty near the Vistula and San, Adolph John sent Frederick of Baden with a relief corps. Polish troops under Stefan Czarniecki and Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski caught that force at Warka on 7 April. The king therefore did not receive the intended help in time, while the Commonwealth won an important victory23.
Adolph John remained significant as Sweden divided its strength between Poland, Prussia and Denmark. Swedish biographical sources also place him on the right wing with Robert Douglas at Gniezno and Warsaw14.
Novel and film
Adolph John belongs to the military background of Sienkiewicz's The Deluge, which does not offer his full biography. No distinct role for him has been verified in Hoffman's film cast56.
