Life

Bohdan Khmelnytsky was probably born around 1595. His early life is poorly documented; the Polish Biographical Dictionary warns against confusing secure facts with later legends. He studied at a Jesuit college in Lviv or Jarosław, served among the Zaporozhian Cossacks and, after a conflict with local officials and loss of property, fled to the Sich. In the winter of 1647–48 he organised a revolt and allied with the Crimean Tatars.1

His forces won at Yellow Waters, Korsun and Pyliavtsi in 1648. The war he began was still underway when Sweden invaded in 1655. The Pereiaslav agreement of 1654 placed the Cossacks under the tsar's authority and helped widen the crisis into a war between the Commonwealth and Moscow.12

During the Deluge

During the Deluge the Commonwealth was still dealing with the Cossack uprising that had begun in 1648. The Polish Army Museum lists Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s Cossack side among participants in the Radnot partition talks3.

The draft treaty envisaged an independent Ukraine for Khmelnytsky. The proposed partition was never implemented, but it shows the breadth of the coalition against the Commonwealth3.

Khmelnytsky died in 1657. In his final months he grappled with succession: a Cossack council nominated his son Yurii, while other soldiers supported Ivan Vyhovsky. That question affected Cossack policy after Rákóczi's failed expedition.1

In the novel and film

Sienkiewicz's The Deluge centres on the Swedish war, while Khmelnytsky's uprising belongs to its earlier historical background. He should not be placed in events after his death. Hoffman's film credits do not list an actor portraying him.45
