The consequences of the Swedish war are hard to separate from the other calamities of those years. The war of 1655–1660 coincided with the war against Muscovy and the Cossacks and with epidemics, and the sources rarely make it possible to establish which of these disasters caused what. That is why on this page every figure is given with its author, and where scholars differ, the dispute is shown openly. The course of the war is described on the page The Swedish Deluge (1655–1660).

Population

In the sources available to us, we found no estimate of population losses for the Commonwealth as a whole for the years 1655–1660 alone. The figures available concern either the whole century or individual provinces.

Economic destruction

Towns bore the costs of occupation directly. A contribution of 600,000 złotys was levied on Kraków in 16559, and monasteries and colleges had to pay ransoms10. Kossarzecki describes how contributions, plunder and the passage of troops ruined the towns, monasteries and manor houses of Greater Poland; he notes, however, that mentions in the castle-court registers (księgi grodzkie) illustrate the phenomenon but do not make it possible to measure it11.

Cultural losses

Kubala writes that church and monastery treasures, wherever they were found, were plundered and carried off to Sweden10. The fate of libraries has been studied best. As early as July 1655 the book collections of the Jesuit college, of the Bernardine and Dominican friaries and of the cathedral library were taken away from Poznań; they were taken over by Claes Rålamb, a war councillor of Charles X Gustav12. Some of the books assigned to the library in the royal castle in Stockholm burned in the fire of 169713.

In April 1656, in the fighting for Leszno, the town's gymnasium burned down together with its archive and library, including the collections of John Amos Comenius15. Court records were lost too: the inspection survey (lustracja) of 1661 recorded that at Kruszwica the castle had been ruined and the „acta publica spalone” ("public records burnt"), and in the municipal records of Poznań there is not a single entry from September 1655 to December 165716. The Treaty of Oliva obliged Sweden to return the archives and libraries it had seized. According to Kossarzecki, many collections came back, among them the Crown Metrica (Metryka Koronna), but many book collections remained in Sweden17.

Political consequences

Under the Treaty of Oliva the Commonwealth lost its rights to Livonia apart from its south-eastern part, and John II Casimir renounced his rights to the Swedish throne18. Kossarzecki points out that the Commonwealth had in any case not actually held Livonia with Riga since the 1620s17. A more lasting consequence was the loss of suzerainty over Ducal Prussia: the Elector of Brandenburg gained sovereignty there1917. „Od tego momentu zaczyna się wzrost potęgi Brandenburgii” ("From that moment the rise of Brandenburg's power begins"), says Kossarzecki, adding that the Commonwealth, a state which before 1648 had dictated terms in this part of Europe, was sliding „do roli przedmiotu rozgrywek państw silniejszych” ("into the role of an object in the games of stronger states")17.

Kossarzecki also points to a military consequence: contact with the Swedish army increased the number of infantry and of foreign-style regiments in the Crown and Lithuanian armies17. In domestic politics, the Sejm (parliament) of 1658 voted to expel the Arians, and the royal court began efforts to secure the election of a successor in the king's lifetime and a reform of the Sejm's procedure20. The Lwów vows of 1656, in which the king promised to ease the lot of the peasants, remained unfulfilled: according to Czapliński, the king never seriously thought of carrying them out20.
