Jasna Góra: history, novel, film

The 1655 siege of the Jasna Góra monastery in Prior Kordecki's account and in the work of historians, in Sienkiewicz's "The Deluge" and in Hoffman's film – through the royal order, the letter of protection and the cannon that burst.

One episode · three accounts

What happened to the cannon?

A heavy gun bursting appears in an account of the siege. The novel and film give that event a hero.

What the sources say

What the sources say

The main source is the prior's own account, the Nova Gigantomachia1, which we quote in Józef Łepkowski's Polish translation2. According to Adam Kersten, Kordecki's description „zawiera pewne nieścisłości” ("contains certain inaccuracies"): it plays down the negotiations with the Swedes and glosses over, though it does not conceal, the act of submission that the monastery's delegation made at the turn of October and November 1655. The act was meant to secure in return a letter of safe-conduct, a salva guardia, and so keep a foreign garrison out of the monastery3. The monks brought back from Kraków a salva guardia signed by Wittenberg and dated 9 November, but, as Kubala writes, „warunkową, aż do dalszego zarządzenia” ("conditional, until further order")4.

A different document was Charles Gustav's proclamation of 30 September 1655, which promised freedom to churches and monasteries. It was this proclamation that the monks invoked when Müller demanded that a garrison be let in56. On the evening of 20 November Captain Kuklinowski showed them the king's order to garrison Bolesław, Wieluń, Krzepice and Częstochowa78. Kordecki replied the next day that the monastery is called Jasna Góra and that the town of Częstochowa does not belong to it at all8.

Towards the end of the siege heavy siege guns arrived from Kraków9. Of the bombardment on Christmas Day Kordecki writes:

Pod wieczór wreszcie jedno ciężkie działo, które najbardziej szkodziło murom klasztoru, pękło i położyło koniec szturmowaniu.

Augustyn Kordecki, Nova Gigantomachia10

(Our translation: "Towards evening, at last, one heavy gun, which had done the most harm to the monastery walls, burst and put an end to the assault.")

We found neither Kmicic nor Babinicz in Kordecki's account or in Kubala's chapter on the siege. Dates, strengths and losses are discussed on the page Siege of Jasna Góra.

What Sienkiewicz wrote

What Sienkiewicz wrote

The siege fills chapters XII–XIX of the novel's second volume12. In many places Sienkiewicz keeps close to Kordecki's account. The prior invokes a letter of protection which, in the novel, comes from the king himself:

– Pomyślcie waszmościowie i nad tym – dodał ksiądz przeor – że ja mam salwę-gwardię od Carolusa Gustawa, jako klasztor i kościół mają być na zawsze od zajęcia i postoju wolne.

Henryk Sienkiewicz, The Deluge (Potop)13

(Our translation: "Consider this too, gentlemen," the prior added, "that I hold a salva guardia from Carolus Gustavus, that the monastery and the church shall be for ever free from occupation and quartering.")

In the next chapter the prior says that in this letter „wyraźna jest obietnica, że klasztor od zajęcia wolnym ma pozostać” ("there is an express promise that the monastery shall remain free from occupation")14. The order brought by Kuklinowski names the same four places as the source: „Lecz Miller miał późniejszy rozkaz królewski zajęcia Bolesławia, Wielunia, Krzepic i Częstochowy” ("But Miller had a later royal order to take Bolesław, Wieluń, Krzepice and Częstochowa")15. We found no mention of the monastery's act of submission in the chapters on the siege.

Sienkiewicz gives the bursting of the gun to his hero. „Babinicz poszedł na ochotnika prochami kolubrynę rozsadzać” ("Babinicz has volunteered to blow up the culverin with powder"), the sword-bearer of Sieradz is told when he asks what is happening, and when the explosion comes, voices on the walls cry out one after another16:

– Działo szwedzkie pękło! – wołał jeden z puszkarzy.

– Cud! Cud!

(...)

– Babinicz działo wysadził! – wołał pan Czarniecki.

Henryk Sienkiewicz, The Deluge (Potop)16

(Our translation: "The Swedish gun has burst!" shouted one of the gunners. / "A miracle! A miracle!" / (...) / "Babinicz has blown up the gun!" shouted Mr Czarniecki.)

Kuklinowski roasts the captured Kmicic with fire in a barn; the Kiemlicz brothers free him, and Kmicic repays his tormentor in kind17. Miller, „po wysadzeniu kolubryny po prostu zdesperował” ("after the culverin was blown up, simply fell into despair")18.

What Hoffman showed

What Hoffman showed

The sources for this column are descriptions of the film, not the film itself. According to the filmpolski.pl database, Babinicz goes to Częstochowa in the second part and defends the monastery. Filming took place at Jasna Góra among other locations, and a huge culverin was built for the film in Elbląg19. The prior was played by Stanisław Jasiukiewicz19.

The fullest account of this part of the film is the synopsis on the "Potop Redivivus" page of the National Film Archive's Digital Repository. Kmicic happens to overhear two Swedish commanders and learns that the Swedes mean to attack the monastery. He rides to Częstochowa and convinces Prior Kordecki that the monastery must be defended. On the walls, monks in their habits stand beside soldiers. The Swedes bring up a culverin, and Kmicic, in disguise, blows it up. Taken prisoner, he „palony jest żywym ogniem” ("is burned with live fire") until the Kiemliczes free him20.

The description on FINA's Polish Film Heritage List says nothing about the Jasna Góra scenes21. Konrad J. Zarębski's commentary in the Repository mentions only that the authorities of the day turned a blind eye to the religious layer of The Deluge, „obecną nie tylko w opisach walk o Jasną Górę” ("present not only in the descriptions of the fighting for Jasna Góra")20.

Why they differ

Comparing a single episode shows the method of each of the three layers. Kordecki's account gives a fact (the gun burst) and its religious interpretation. The historian Kubala keeps the bare fact. The novel keeps the skeleton of the source: the order to garrison four places, the guns from Kraków, the bursting of the largest gun and Müller's discouragement. It changes the letter of protection, though: according to Kubala it is a salva guardia signed by Wittenberg and conditional4; in the novel it is a letter from the king with an "express" promise that the monastery will not be touched22. We did not find the proclamation of 30 September in the chapters of the novel we cite.
