Course of events
Paweł Jan Sapieha’s Lithuanian forces fought Bogusław Radziwiłł’s troops at Janów. The action formed part of the fighting in Lithuania alongside the Crown campaign.1
A closer look
Paweł Jan Sapieha’s Lithuanian troops, loyal to John Casimir, defeated forces of Bogusław Radziwiłł, who supported Charles X Gustav. The battle shows how the Deluge divided Lithuanian elites: both sides came from the Grand Duchy.1
A new hetman and a divided Lithuania
Sapieha had held the office of grand Lithuanian hetman since early March 1656. In the museum’s account, Janów therefore belongs to the opening operations described under his new command.1
Follow the political division through the biographies of Sapieha and Radziwiłł and the Kėdainiai agreements. The brief museum entry supplies neither a battle plan nor casualty totals; it cannot establish a sequence of charges or exact unit positions.
