Course of events

Charles X Gustav defeated Stefan Czarniecki’s forces at Gołąb. Polish troops nevertheless continued operations against the Swedish army.1

A closer look

Charles X Gustav was conducting a winter and spring advance toward Sandomierz, Zamość and Lwów, where John Casimir was staying. Czarniecki tried to stop him but suffered one of his heavier defeats at Gołąb. That defeat did not end his campaign against Sweden.1

Why did Czarniecki’s campaign continue?

Władysław Czapliński writes that the Swedish king caught Czarniecki before all his units had assembled. Afterwards the commander avoided a pitched battle with the main royal army and harassed it instead.2 Follow the campaign through Jarosław and Warka.

Why do dates differ?

Czapliński’s biography gives 18 February, while the Integrated Educational Platform gives 19 February 1656. This site’s chronology uses the former date; the disagreement between accounts is recorded here.23
