Course of events

Stefan Czarniecki defeated the vanguard of Charles X Gustav’s army at Jarosław. The engagement took place during manoeuvres in the south of the Commonwealth.1

A closer look

Czarniecki defeated the vanguard of Charles X Gustav’s withdrawing army. The museum records a military and political consequence: a substantial part of the standing Crown troops that had supported the Swedes changed sides and joined John Casimir and Czarniecki.1

Where did it happen?

The Jarosław museum places the clash on the approaches east of the San River. Charles X Gustav was returning from an unsuccessful campaign toward Lviv. Swedish units first faced persistent, if uncoordinated, attacks by local peasants who knew the terrain. Troops under Czarniecki and Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski then struck from another direction.2

A war close to home

Lubomirski was also protecting his own estates, including the palace at Łańcut. The local museum estimates Swedish dead in the hundreds. The battle later appeared in Sienkiewicz's novel The Deluge, so the campaign account has a distinct literary afterlife.2
