Return from exile

In mid-January 1656 John II Casimir arrived in Łańcut after travelling from Silesia. The castle of Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski housed the royal court and commanders for roughly two weeks1.

A shared commitment

Around 20 January, Crown dignitaries and army commanders formed a confederation in the king’s presence. Participants included Stefan Czarniecki, Stanisław Rewera Potocki and Stanisław Lanckoroński. They committed themselves to fighting the invader1.

Why it matters

The king had left the Commonwealth in October 1655. His return and the gathering of commanders around him showed the political and military resistance regrouping. Sources date the confederation to around 20 January, so the timeline gives the month rather than an exact day1.
