Nobleman
Andrzej Słupecki
Historical figureSignatory of the surrender at Ujście whose later life requires caution with the evidence.
Place in the events
Andrzej Słupecki was one of the Polish signatories of the act of 25 July 1655, alongside Krzysztof Opaliński, Andrzej Karol Grudziński, Paweł Gębicki and Maksymilian Miaskowski. Arvid Wittenberg represented Sweden. The act placed two voivodeships under Charles X Gustav's protection and promised to preserve noble rights.1
Limits of the evidence
His name on the act establishes participation in a decision that accelerated Sweden's occupation of Greater Poland. It does not establish independent command, what he said during deliberations, or his later allegiance. Those parts of a life cannot be stated as facts without further records. The gap reflects surviving evidence rather than the importance of the signature.2
Novel and film
The surrender at Ujście is important background to The Deluge, but Słupecki is not separately named in the verified cast of Hoffman's film.3
