The noble levy

Maksymilian Miaskowski was castellan of Krzywiń, a senator from Greater Poland. His name appears in records of the noble levy as early as 1649: he was appointed to command one of its groups, though Hieronim Kowalski was to stand in for him. Thus his role in 1655 was more than a chance appearance among signatories.1

Ujście, 25 July 1655

At Ujście he joined voivodes Krzysztof Opaliński and Andrzej Karol Grudziński in signing an act that placed the Poznań and Kalisz voivodeships under Charles X Gustav's protection. The document promised to uphold noble rights and religious freedom, but opened the way into Greater Poland for Swedish troops. Signing together does not establish that every signatory had the same motives or later career.2

Novel, film and evidence

Ujście provides a key starting point for the world of Sienkiewicz's The Deluge. We found no separately credited Miaskowski role in Hoffman's film. The available sources establish his office and participation in two mobilizations, but do not support a detailed private life story.3
