A Greater Poland senator

Paweł Gębicki (also spelled Gembicki in older sources) held the office of castellan of Międzyrzecz. That gave him a Senate seat and placed him among those expected to help decide Greater Poland's defence. He was not the overall commander at Ujście; leadership lay with voivodes Krzysztof Opaliński and Andrzej Karol Grudziński.1

Signing the capitulation

On 25 July 1655 he was one of five Polish dignitaries named under the act surrendering the Poznań and Kalisz voivodeships. This political decision had far-reaching consequences: Sweden gained control of Greater Poland's towns and revenues. The source establishes Gębicki's signature, but neither his exact argument in the council nor his later conduct.2

Novel and film

Ujście matters to the novel's historical setting, but Gębicki has no confirmed separate role in Hoffman's film. Participation in the event does not by itself mean appearance in a particular screen scene.3
