At Jasna Góra

Piotr Czarniecki was among the lay defenders during the siege of Jasna Góra. Historian Ludwik Kubala names him as a leader of sorties outside the walls. During one of them, his men spiked two larger enemy guns: they blocked the firing vents, preventing the guns from being used immediately1.

Why he matters

The defence involved more than enduring a bombardment. Sorties led by Czarniecki and Stefan Zamojski disrupted the besiegers' batteries. These small-unit actions are easily lost in a story centred on Prior Kordecki4.

Novel and film

Sienkiewicz made Jasna Góra a turning point of his novel, and Hoffman's film gave the siege a powerful visual form. Piotr's presence in siege sources does not, however, establish a separately named screen part; the verified cast does not list him individually.5
