Clergy
Piotr Parczewski
Historical figureBishop of Samogitia in the later Kėdainiai talks; older editions wrongly placed him at the August act.
A bishop in threatened Lithuania
Piotr Parczewski was bishop of Smolensk before becoming bishop of Samogitia in 1649. His diocese stood in the crisis created by simultaneous Muscovite and Swedish offensives. The safety of clergy, church property and Catholic institutions mattered alongside the question of military allegiance.1
Which act did he sign?
Older editions place him among participants in the August act at Kėdainiai. Henryk Wisner, checking the original, found that the bishop was not there then. He arrived later and signed the final agreement of 20 October 1655. This chronological distinction matters: he should not be portrayed as witnessing the August ceremony.12
After Kėdainiai
In 1656 he took the title administrator of the bishopric of Vilnius. He died in 1658 as bishop of Samogitia. The documents establish his offices and political choice but do not prove every personal motive later attributed to the signatories.1
Novel and film
His role belongs to the religious and diplomatic background of the Lithuanian strand of The Deluge. The cast of Hoffman's film contains no confirmed separate Parczewski role.3
