Office and signature

Samuel Komorowski was starosta of Ukmergė and a Lithuanian camp officer. His name appears on the original August act at Kėdainiai. Historian Henryk Wisner found that an older edition mistakenly named “Adam Komorowski, governor of Vilnius”; the original instead lists Samuel and, separately, Eliasz Komorowski, the standard-bearer of Ukmergė. These identities must not be folded into a single biography.1

What the choice meant

Signing the August conditions meant joining an attempt to secure Swedish protection for Lithuania after Muscovite forces had occupied Vilnius and the Commonwealth could not defend the Grand Duchy effectively. A signature alone does not establish participation in all later talks or prove the office attributed to “Adam” in the faulty copy. Separate evidence would be needed to reconstruct Samuel's later career.1

Novel and film

The signatories form part of the historical background to the Lithuanian chapters of The Deluge. Samuel has no confirmed separate role in Hoffman's film cast.2
