An artillery specialist

Krzysztof Grodzicki (d. 1659) came from modest nobility. Patronage enabled him and his brother Paweł to study military engineering and artillery in the Netherlands. Krzysztof also served during the Thirty Years' War. This training explains why he was later entrusted with complex siege work, not just a collection of guns1.

Kodak and the eastern front

He became commander of the Dnieper fortress of Kodak in 1640. His garrison survived a prolonged Cossack siege in 1648 and surrendered only after food and ammunition ran out; Grodzicki was taken prisoner. Later, as Crown artillery general, he increased the number of guns and mortars and trained gunners. In 1655 he defended Lviv against Cossack and Russian forces. His career illustrates how the Swedish invasion overlapped with war in the east1.

Warsaw and Toruń

Grodzicki directed artillery during the recovery of Warsaw in summer 1656. Two years later he helped blockade and besiege the Swedish garrison in Toruń, alongside imperial troops under Louis Raduit de Souches and forces led by Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski. His specialist role concerned guns and siege works, rather than overall command of the combined armies. He continued campaigning in Prussia in 1659 and died that autumn12.

Sienkiewicz and film

Sienkiewicz wrote about Grodzicki chiefly in With Fire and Sword, in the account of Kodak. Hoffman's The Deluge has no distinct verified Grodzicki role in its cast. His documented part in the fighting for Warsaw and Toruń deserves attention independently of the adaptation13.
