A mission before the war

Jan Leszczyński (d. 1678) belonged to Greater Poland's political elite. In 1655 he travelled to Stockholm as an extraordinary envoy, attempting to prevent Charles X Gustav's planned invasion. The mission failed, but it shows that diplomacy preceded the Swedish crossing of the border1.

From invasion to Oliva

Leszczyński became voivode of Poznań in 1656. Five years after the failed Stockholm mission, he led Commonwealth negotiations at Oliva. The treaty ended the war with Sweden, but many powers took part in the negotiations: Crown and Lithuania, Sweden, the emperor, Brandenburg and French mediators. Leszczyński helped turn the outcome of an exhausting war into a political settlement12.

He later became Grand Crown Chancellor. His career thus forms a striking arc from an unsuccessful effort to prevent invasion to a leading role in making peace1.

Novel and film

Sienkiewicz's The Deluge completes its main characters' stories without a full account of the peace congress. Leszczyński's diplomacy extends the history beyond the novel's plot. No separate voivode role has been verified in Hoffman's film cast34.
