A Habsburg diplomat

François-Paul de Lisola (1613–1674) came from Burgundy and made his career in Habsburg diplomacy. He worked at several European courts. He did more than attend conferences: he helped build alliances intended to check Sweden and protect imperial interests. In 1656 he contributed to the Habsburg alliance with the Commonwealth, and in 1658 to one with Brandenburg1.

Oliva and rival diplomats

Lisola represented imperial interests during negotiations leading to the Peace of Oliva in 1660. Sweden, the Commonwealth, Brandenburg and France were also represented. The French mediator Antoine de Lumbres served another court's interests. Oliva was therefore more than a bilateral settlement between two armies12.

Afterwards Lisola worked to assemble a wider coalition against Louis XIV and became known as a political writer. For an imperial diplomat, ending the Deluge was one part of a larger contest over the European balance of power1.

Novel and film

Sienkiewicz's The Deluge focuses on the fighting and Kmicic's transformation; the 1660 negotiations form a later chapter of the history. No separate Lisola role has been verified in Hoffman's film cast34.
