France at the negotiating table

Antoine de Lumbres served French diplomacy in the mid-seventeenth century. The French diplomatic archive holds an account of his mission in Poland covering 1656–1665. His presence at Oliva was thus part of a sustained French engagement in northern European affairs, not a single visit1.

Mediating peace

At the Oliva negotiations, Lumbres acted as a French mediator. The talks concerned not only the Commonwealth and Sweden but also Brandenburg and the emperor. France sought a northern peace compatible with its own alliances. François-Paul de Lisola represented imperial interests, which were not identical to France's21.

After 1660 Lumbres remained involved with the Polish court, including discussions over the royal succession. His career connects the end of the war with later struggles over the future of John Casimir's monarchy13.

Novel and film

Sienkiewicz's novel and Hoffman's film centre on the war and Kmicic. Lumbres mattered chiefly to the diplomatic settlement; no separate role for him has been verified in the film cast45.
