The Swedish king on screen

Leon Niemczyk played Charles X Gustav1. The screen character belongs to a Sienkiewicz adaptation; the real monarch’s biography establishes political aims and actions beyond Kmicic’s adventures.

Experience before The Deluge

Niemczyk was born in Warsaw on 15 December 1923 and died in Łódź on 29 November 20061. His important earlier work includes Kawalerowicz’s Night Train and Polański’s Knife in the Water2. Hoffman’s production did not mark the beginning of his career.

A biography from a police archive

PAP describes a handwritten biography Niemczyk prepared in 1987 when applying for a firearm permit. It was found in Łódź police archives and transferred to the Museum of Cinematography. He recorded his external acting examination in 1952 and exclusive work in film from 19792.

This is an unusual biographical trace: the actor’s own document written for a specific administrative purpose survives. The details are reported through PAP’s account; we have not examined the manuscript ourselves.

From performance to the monarch’s history

Continue with the historical Charles X Gustav, the war’s history and the film–book comparison. A screen king cannot replace documentation of the Swedish court’s decisions.

Costume and sword before The Deluge

The Swedish king was not Niemczyk’s first costume role. He had already played Fulko de Lorche in Knights of the Teutonic Order (1960), Don Avadoro in The Saragossa Manuscript and Count Lacherenne in Countess Cosel (1969). Culture.pl also records that he devised the duels for Countess Cosel3. That credit belongs to Antczak’s film, not to the fight choreography of The Deluge.

Working in supporting roles

Speaking to Film in 1985, Niemczyk explained that he accepted modest offers because he believed he could make something worthwhile out of a weak part. Culture.pl quotes this statement in its account of his many supporting roles and brief appearances4.
