Czarniecki: a historical person in an adaptation

Wiesław Gołas played Stefan Czarniecki1. Unlike the fictional Kmicic, Czarniecki has a historical biography. The screen role selects what the adaptation needs, rather than presenting his entire command career.

Adam Kersten, the film’s co-writer, also wrote a monograph on Czarniecki. The book offers a fuller account of the commander’s life than his part in the adaptation.

An actor known for comedy

Gołas was born in Kielce in 1930. Polish Radio recalls his work in Koń and Dudek cabarets, the Dramatyczny and Polski theatres, and his performance of W Polskę idziemy. In 2002 he received a Television Star award for film and television performances2. His comedy fame does not encompass his entire career: The Deluge casts him as a military leader.

Wartime experience beyond the screen

In testimony reported by Polish Radio, Gołas connected the tragic side of his life with wartime experience: as a teenage Grey Ranks member, he was imprisoned and interrogated by the Gestapo in Kielce3.

Two recorded birthdays

Polish Radio distinguishes the registered date of 4 October from the actual birthday it reports as 9 October 19302. The date summary here therefore uses the year. Gołas died on 9 September 20211.

Czarniecki in the final battle

In the production report, Czarniecki lets Wołodyjowski attack the Swedish baggage train. The hussars charge and Kmicic duels with Bogusław. Gołas therefore plays the commander whose decision shapes the course of the film’s battle4.
