The fortress at Danków

Stanisław Warszycki (1599–1681) enrolled at the Kraków Academy in 1617/1618. He later served as voivode of Mazovia and, from 1651, castellan of Kraków, one of the Crown's highest senatorial offices. He turned Danków into a bastioned fortress. Poland's National Heritage Board describes its near-rectangular layout as unusual in the country and confirms that he defended it during the war with Sweden.12

Help for Jasna Góra

Warszycki did not command the Jasna Góra garrison. His contribution came before the siege: Prior Kordecki recorded that the castellan sent twelve guns to the monastery. The National Heritage Board confirms material help from Danków. The precise number of guns rests on the prior's account32.

Beyond the monastery

The Heritage Board also credits Warszycki with retaking Pilica and Krzepice. His fortress and aid to Jasna Góra show that resistance in the region had more than one strongpoint2.

Novel and film

Accounts of Jasna Góra often remember the prior and men on the walls. Warszycki mattered as a supplier of weapons and owner of a neighbouring fortress, though he did not command the monastery. We found no separate part for him in the verified cast of Hoffman's adaptation.4
