Jan Wejhard Wrzesowicz

Before the main siege

On 8 November 1655 a cavalry detachment under Jan Wejhard Wrzesowicz appeared before Jasna Góra. The Polish Army Museum says he demanded the fortress's surrender. The monks refused. General Burchard Müller's main force arrived later, on 18 November¹.

The National Museum in Warsaw describes his attempt as a mixture of intimidation and mediation. The first demand at the walls was thus distinct from the weeks-long siege with heavy artillery that followed².

Spellings

Polish sources use both “Wrzesowicz” and “Wrzeszczewicz”; his given name also appears as “Wejhard” or “Weihard”. These forms refer to the same commander¹²³.

Novel and film

Sienkiewicz presents him as Count Weyhard Wrzeszczowicz in The Deluge. Mieczysław Voit played him in Hoffman's film. The variant spelling explains why a reader searching for the film character might miss historical records under “Wrzesowicz”⁴⁵.
