Before the Deluge

Carl Gustaf Wrangel was born at Skokloster in 1613. His family's position advanced his career: he was a colonel at 22 and a major general three years later. He gained experience in the Thirty Years' War and commanded a Swedish-Dutch fleet against Denmark in 1644. In 1648 he became governor general of Swedish Pomerania.1

Connection to the Commonwealth war

The biography of Burchard Müller places Wrangel above him in the Pomeranian command structure: Müller acted for the absent governor general in 1656 and commanded the cavalry's left wing directly under Wrangel near Gniezno. The distinction matters. Wrangel did not command the siege of Jasna Góra; he was involved in later Swedish operations to which Müller returned.2

Wrangel was a leading figure in Sweden's military establishment. Building Skokloster Castle, begun in 1654, displayed his wealth and standing. Period portraits survive, including paintings by David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl (1652) and Matthäus Merian (1662).1

Later life

He died on Rügen in 1676 and was buried in the family vault at Skokloster after a Stockholm funeral. Here he helps explain the Swedish chain of command; we do not assign him an unverified scene in Sienkiewicz's novel or a separate film role.13
