End of a long war

On 30 January 1667 the Commonwealth and Russia concluded the Truce of Andrusovo. Their war had begun in 1654, before the Swedish invasion, and continued after the Peace of Oliva1.

Terms

The Commonwealth lost Smolensk, the Chernihiv region and lands east of the Dnieper in Ukraine. Kyiv was to remain under Russian control temporarily, but it was never returned. The Polish Army Museum also describes territory retained by the Commonwealth1.

Why it appears here

The truce closed a conflict that had strained the state alongside the Deluge. It was separate from the treaty with Sweden and helps show the full sequence of wars in this period1.
