Civil war

On 13 July 1666 near Inowrocław, forces loyal to John II Casimir fought rebels supporting Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski. The royal army was defeated1.

Why did former allies fight?

After the external wars, a dispute grew over royal authority and a plan to elect the king’s successor during his lifetime. Lubomirski, formerly a commander in the war against Sweden, led armed opposition. The Polish Army Museum calls Mątwy the bloodiest battle of the 1665–1666 rebellion12.

A separate conflict

This event belongs to the Commonwealth’s later political crisis. It was not a battle with Sweden. For context, see After the Peace of Oliva2.
