Eight years after Oliva

On 16 September 1668 John II Casimir abdicated. He was the last Commonwealth ruler of the Polish Vasa line. Between Oliva and his abdication, the state faced continued war with Russia and Lubomirski’s rebellion1.

Succession dispute

The king and his supporters sought to elect a successor during his lifetime. Nobles and magnates opposed the plan. Historian Dorota Gregorowicz also describes diplomatic efforts around the widowed king’s future before his abdication1.

Scope

The Commonwealth did not end with the abdication. This event closes the story of the monarch who ruled during the Deluge and its political aftermath. Read more: After the Peace of Oliva1.
