Course of events

During the 1659 campaign, Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski’s troops retook Grudziądz from the Swedes. The city had been occupied since late 1655.1

A closer look

The Grudziądz museum says Swedish troops took the city in late 1655 and Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski’s forces recovered it in the 1659 campaign. The town was almost entirely destroyed in the fighting. The museum also reports the discovery of new historical sources, but its notice does not establish the exact day of recapture.1

Victory and destruction

Recapturing the town did not mean saving its buildings. Grudziądz's museum connects the victory with the town's near-total destruction during the fighting. This adds an important perspective to a short entry about military success: the same episode was a catastrophe for the inhabitants1.

What evidence is available here

The linked museum text announces a 2019 lecture by Dawid Schoenwald. It reports the discovery of new historical sources without reproducing them. It therefore does not allow a reconstruction of individual assaults or an exact casualty count. Read the Grudziądz profile for the town's history and its Vistula granaries1.
