A crisis before the invasion
In 1648 the Cossack uprising led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky became a major war in the southeast of the Commonwealth. The Polish Army Museum identifies social and religious tensions and uncertain policy towards registered Cossacks among the causes1.
What happened?
In May Crown troops were defeated at Yellow Waters and Korsun. Both Crown hetmans were captured at Korsun. Years of fighting consumed resources before Sweden launched its invasion12.
Connection to the Deluge
The uprising was neither a Swedish operation nor the beginning of the Deluge itself. It explains why the Commonwealth could not concentrate all its forces against a new invader in July 1655. See Why did Sweden invade? for the wider setting2.
