Course of events

Forces led by Stefan Czarniecki and Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski fought the Swedes at Kłecko. The Polish Army Museum assesses the outcome as a Swedish victory.1

A closer look

Czarniecki and Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski marched into Greater Poland to support local resistance. The museum estimates about 15,000 soldiers and levymen against roughly 6,000 Swedes with strong artillery. Their attempt to lure the enemy into an ambush did not produce a victory.1

How is the outcome assessed?

The Polish Army Museum calls the battle a Swedish victory. The Integrated Educational Platform describes it as inconclusive, stressing the failure to draw the Swedes onto open ground and the Polish shortage of infantry and guns.12 These are different assessments of the same engagement.

Troop figures also differ. The older Czarniecki biography gives about 9,000 Poles and 8,000 Swedes, unlike the museum’s estimates. None of these figures should be read as an exact attendance roll.3
